WCBR’s Picks Of The Week

Kyle’s Top Picks

Pick of the Week: Dark Reign: The List – Punisher – Easily the best List one-shot, Dark Reign: The List – Punisher is one of the most brutal comics released this year.  John Romita Jr. is at the absolute top of his game throughout the book and Rick Remenders script ends on an truly unforgettable note.  I’ve never been a Punisher reader, but I sure as hell am now!

Most Anticipated: The Marvelous Land of Oz #1 – The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was one of the best Marvel releases of the past year and an easy contender for mini-series of the year.  Skottie Young and Eric Shanower absolutely knocked the adaptation of the L. Frank Baum’s classic out of the park.  I fully expect The Marvelous Land of Oz to be a worthy follow-up and can’t wait to get my hands on the first issue of it.

Other Top Picks: Batman: Widening Gyre #3, Sweet Tooth #3, Assault on New Olypus, Astonishing X-Men #32, Deadpool Team-Up #899, Black Widow: Deadly Origin #1, Strange Tales #3, X-Men Vs. Agents of Atlas #2, Athena #2, Haunt #2

DS’ Top Picks

Best of the Past Week: Blackes Night: Titans #3 – Despite a strong showing by Blackest Night #4, I have to give the title to Blackest Night: Titans #3. I really love the quick, effective personal growth in Donna and Gar and the slapdown against the super-powered zombies.

Most Anticipated: Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural #2 – I’m a sucker for a Sorcerer Supreme and Remender started this series off right in the first issue!

Other Top Picks: Secret Six #15, The Great Ten #1, Magog #3, Superman: The World of New Krypton #9, Black Widow: Deadly Origin #1, Captain America: Reborn #4, Ghost Rider: Heavens on Fire #4, Immortal Weapons #4, Psylocke #1, The Marvelous Land of Oz #1, X-Men Origins: Iceman #1

Alex’s Top Picks

Best of the Past Week: Wolverine: Weapon X #6 -In such an amazing week of comics, with very strong efforts from Detective Comics, Fantastic Four, Blackest Night, and Northlanders, it’s a Wolverine book that takes the prize.  Granted, it does so by not reading like a Wolverine comic.  A truly creative horror comic that shatters all expectations and norms.

Most Anticipated: Captain America: Reborn #4 -It’s a light week for me, but thankfully, Ed Brubaker always delivers.

Other Picks: Sweet Tooth #3, Secret Six #15

Joe’s Top Picks

Best of the Past Week: Blackest Night #4 – Johns, as usual, gives us another exciting, creepy chapter of the latest DC epic and it succeeds on all fronts.  Now that the Big Bad has finally revealed itself to our struggling heroes, I can’t wait for this story to take it to the next level.  Great issue!

Most Anticipated: Marvelous Land of Oz #1 – I could eat Skottie Young’s art up like a meal.  It is seriously that good.  He and writer Eric Shanower made a story that I never thought I’d care about (besides the random catching of the Wizard of Oz film on TV) into something I can’t wait to read the next installment of with the last miniseries, Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  This is must-buy.

Other Top Picks: Doom Patrol #4, Secret Six #15, Superman: World of New Krytpon #9, Buffy the Vampire Slayer #30, Sweet Tooth #3, Age of Bronze #29, Assault on New Olympus, Astonishing X-Men #32, Captain America Reborn #4, Ghost Riders: Heavens on Fire #4, Nova #31, Psylocke #1, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #4, X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas #2, X-Men Origins Iceman, Strange Tales #3, Unknown: Devil Made Flesh #2, Absolution #3, Stumptown #1
